It’s hot. Really hot.

"It’s hot. Really hot." 🥵I was just out for my daily encirkl run and honestly, at these temperatures, keeping up with my usual loop is pure exhaustion right now.

When I got back home, I saw the same sight you see in almost every apartment district: split-system AC units buzzing on every facade. Every single apartment is cooling for itself. Every single unit is draining electricity individually. And the worst part? They are all blowing their hot exhaust air right back onto the street, heating up our cities even further.

It’s a vicious cycle. And while politicians in Berlin seriously believe they can save the urban climate by installing individual "shadow islands" (Schatteninseln) for thousands of Euros 🌴🤦‍♂️, the real, scalable solution is literally right under our feet:

Why aren’t we using our existing district heating networks as "district cooling" infrastructure during the summer? 🧊💡

The concept is brilliant and has been used for large-scale commercial buildings in cities like Munich, Hamburg, and Chemnitz for decades. But why not roll it out across entire residential apartment districts?

• Centralized Efficiency: One large, central cooling plant (e.g., using river water or geothermal probes) operates many times more efficiently than hundreds of tiny individual split AC units.
• True Heat Recycling: The heat extracted from apartments during the summer doesn’t just evaporate into the air. It can be captured to heat tap water or stored deep underground for the upcoming winter.
• Urban Climate Protection: No more overheated streets caused by individual AC exhaust air.

Of course, retrofitting existing networks (dealing with 4-pipe systems and condensation on old radiators) is a challenge and requires investment. But for every new development and major street renovation, district cooling (or cold district heating) should be the absolute standard today.

We don't need expensive band-aids on the symptoms of global warming. We need bold infrastructure projects that tackle the root of the problem.
